Galactic Melodrama : What if we are living in a Space Opera?

“The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the Universe to know itself” – Carl Sagan

This ever majestic genre of space opera never fails to enthrall all of us. The sensational franchise, Star Wars is one of the most popular examples of this genre. The movie ‘Trip to the Moon (1902) by Georges Mêlées is considered as the beginning of this sub-genre.  Rising to immense popularity in 20th century, this sub-genre had become a favorite of film fanatics.

Life beyond earth is always an exciting concept and triggers our imagination like no other. We surround ourselves with numerous fantasies, stories, conspiracies or theories which cater to our fascination with the unknown.  On similar lines, can we believe that our own universe is a soap opera too? What if the galactic melodrama we experience on silhouette is also present in our real lives? It is not that ‘strange’ if you start to give it a thought! Thomas Edison once said that, ‘until man duplicates a blade of grass, nature can laugh at his so-called scientific knowledge’. Hitherto, humanity has been unable to duplicate any natural phenomenon completely. Even today we cannot predict earthquakes. Somehow, our so-called scientific knowledge is still limited in so many ways. However, there are instances which make our life on earth nothing lower than a space opera. Life itself is magical enough when we consider the absence of it on any of our known planets. Our perception of color ‘makes’ this galaxy colorful because, scientifically, colors do not exist as such in the interstellar space. Existence of constellations, astrology, astrophysics would not even be possible of we had remained like our predecessor species! Though this theory sounds much like solipsism but it cannot be refuted as such.

Agreeing with Carl Sagan, we are indeed a way of the universe to know itself. It is exhilarating when we add humane elements to space and work up our imagination to it to make our universe exciting in movies. As a part of this universe, our lives become exciting as well. Now, it is up to us to lead this movie to a better climax. Our scene is coming, where we have to save our earth from climate crisis (just like a damsel) and become an eternal hero in the eyes of prodigy.
